Gav
Winsborrow (June trip Helper)
Favourite river:
Wolfs gorge, Rosanna.
A fast and furious ride with barely a moment to catch your breath
before the river drops out of sight around one of the many bends in
this deep gorge. With each corner comes a mixtures of emotions, from
apprehension to pure exhilaration. As these emotions build, so too
does the realisation that it is near impossible to stop as the river
carries the paddler through the gorge on a conveyor belt of ice cold
water. In one of the few eddies with a capacity greater than 1
kayak, Martin turns to me and asks if we really need 3 paddlers for
this section - the apprehension is strong in this one! The answer is
of course 'yes', coupled with 'you'll be fine'. The gorge
culminates in a final section with a large log spanning the river.
A wave train approaches the log and the exit to the Wolfs Gorge. On
approaching the log, a peak of the wave train elevates the
unsuspecting paddler to give them the brief, distinct feeling that
stomach armour would've been a good idea. A fortunately
positioned trough beneath the log allows the paddler to feel the
breeze on their face as the log passes by above them. With
familiarity, the gorge becomes a predictable journey. Stoppers,
waves and mid-stream eddies can be used to gracefully carve from
left to right through gratifying sections of steep, boulder filled,
grade IV rapids. A definite 'must' for anyone visiting the Landeck
area. |
